The Cost of Freedom - The Anthology of Peace & Activism from Howling Dog Press is now out and in stores.
This book documents the anti-Iraq war movement from a time before shock & awe to the present. It's been endorsed by such progressive thinkers as Pete Seeger, Ramsey Clark & Noam Chomsky.
Why, I'd think it was just wonderful even if I did not have a poem in it, which I do! (Ode to Old Europe, on page 61.)
Not only would this look good on your coffee table, it makes a great gift!

ODE TO OLD EUROPE

At times, it tries your patience to be someone else’s friend,
To try and do what’s best rather than see someone descend
To depths of such tomfoolery, you have to intervene
Before he goes and does something, so dumb it’s just obscene.

Let’s say you see a Cadillac with longhorns on the hood,
“War Wagon” painted on the sides, you know it’s not for good,
A nervous Tony Blair is seated, buckled in the back,
And then you realize that damn thing is pointed at Iraq.

And then you hear a slurring of the words, “the Eyes of Texas”
That’s when you get a sinking feeling in your solar plexus,
Because you see George Bush approach, the fool can hardly walk,
And with the keys grasped in his hand, he’s stabbing at the lock.

His nose is red, his eyes bloodshot, his suit is vomit-spattered,
You’d better say a few words now, as if none other mattered,
At first Bush does not know you’re there, then in your face, he’ll sneeze.
You look him firmly in the eye, and say, “Give me the keys.”

“Like Hell!” George Bush will snarl, and add, “I gotta ousht Shaddam,
Sho open up dis door for me, and den g’wan and scram!
And don’ go shtandin’ in my way and actin’ like a punk,
And don’ you go try tellin’ me, I’m mush to drive to drunk!”

At times like this, you have to use your heaviest artillery,
Though you can hardly breathe, for George Bush smells like a distillery.
You have to stand your ground; you need not even start with “Please.”
You must not compromise, you say, “George Bush, give me the keys!”

Now, chances are minute that George will willingly comply,
And hand to you those keys, and then go off somewhere to dry,
He’ll probably get nastier each moment by degrees,
Yet you cannot give up, repeat, “George Bush, give me the keys!”

And if George Bush to violence turns, and you two come to blows,
And, say, George Bush then throws a punch that flattens out your nose,
The Cadillac roars off, you watch it weaving down the road,
And you are so disgusted that you feel you could explode,

Though George Bush might not realize it, you are his truest friend,
You did your very best to bring this nonsense to an end.
And though there’s much to be desired in George Bush’s attitude,
The rest of us all will all agree: we owe you scads of gratitude!
