How Long?

How Long?
How long should it take to learn to walk;
To learn to talk;
And what if--
What if there are complications?
What if the body isn't perfect?
Should we fault the person for not fitting the mold--
Not keeping the schedule;
Or do we have compassion and patience
And let them learn in their own due time?
How long does it take to learn to heal;
To learn to feel;
And what if--
What if the heart is scarred?
Should we fault the person for not keeping the schedule;
Or do we have compassion and patience
And let them heal in their own due time?
So many times I've heard
Restrictions voiced with critical words;
"At their age, they should be able . . ."
Did you see what was on their table?
Who is the unfeeling one?
Knots tied hard aren't quickly undone.
No-one wants happiness more than they
Whose broken hearts hold it at bay.
For the experience that must be proved
Over and over till stones are moved.
Sun can't shine through solid rock
Nor healing be timed by earthly clock.
Much love to all,
Barbie
