Melancholy

They say a poem's not really a poem until you share it with someone else. And that's what this place is all about.

Old demons rarely stray
When into light the haunted step away.
In the shadows they just hibernate
until a sudden turn of fate
into the darkness returns their prey.

My first thought is * Hands you a flashlight!*
Second thought... * use it to bonk those demons out cold and shine your brilliant soul! *

I get weary of the broad statements of things like... * Don't revisit your past... you don't live there anymore.... blah blah walk away from all that hinders you.... blah blah.... live in the now! * and such.
Life needs to be dealt with. None of us can pretend things undone. None of us can heal without accepting. Sometimes you simply have to go back and face those demons and win!

What you've written is how life tends to be. Might feel like those demons are going to devour.... but while out in the light.... we gain strengths that help us navigate even in the darkness and find the doorway to leave them where they were... and take ourselves where we need to be. Never easy... also never impossible.

So appreciate the honesty and the rawness. It is always a difficult place to find oneself... most certainly is.

Thank You Lion for these wise and supportive words.
Feeling better, 'lighter', and better equipped, already :)

Thoughts on demons illustrate their antics well in this poem. Almost for real. TFS.
